Thinking about a career in engineering or the skilled trades? Crafting a CV that highlights your skills, enthusiasm, and readiness for an apprenticeship is the first step to making a great impression. After talking with local pupils and teachers recently, we created a practical guide to help aspiring apprentices understand what we think stands out on an application for skilled trades apprenticeships.
Our new downloadable guide, Top Tips for a Standout Apprenticeship CV, is designed to give you clear, actionable advice for showcasing your best qualities—whether you’re interested in engineering, mechanics, electrical work, or other skilled trades. This resource is filled with insights on highlighting any relevant experience, presenting practical skills, and bringing forward what we like to call the “X-Factor”—the unique qualities that make you stand out from other applicants.
Apprenticeship Applications: What You Need to Know
Most apprenticeships are more than just jobs—they’re a commitment to several years of hands-on learning and growth. Employers want to see candidates who are genuinely interested in the field and ready to make that commitment. Doing some research into a company or industry not only shows you’re engaged but also helps you decide if this path is right for you.
Apprenticeships typically open up once a year, and opportunities fill up quickly. While our own positions are filled for 2024, applications generally open around May each year through Engineering Apprenticeships | Connecting Employers & Apprentices, so mark your calendars if you’re aiming to apply in the future. Engineering apprenticeships, like those with The Engineering College in Birkenhead, usually require a minimum of three GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C), especially in English and Maths. For specific entry details, check their website to be ready when applications open.
