Company History
Studley Established 1983
October 1983
After being made redundant, Partners Martin Hyland and Tony Brierton establish a new Mechanical Engineering firm at an old foundry workshop on Paisley Street, Liverpool. The business rapidly outgrew the original premises and moved their then band of 16 around the corner to Vulcan Street four years later.
Relocation to Vulcan Street & Studley Apprenticeship Programme 1986
January 1986
The Vulcan Street workshops remained the home of Studley for the next 28 years and supported us through mass growth and expansion across nearly three decades. Vulcan Street also welcomed our first Apprentice turned Director Neil Brierton in September 1986. The Studley Apprenticeship Programme is renowned for developing the future generation of engineering talent. Studley is committed to providing the highest quality practical and academic training to develop future engineers needed to drive our business forward. As the company continues to grow, it is evident that our Apprenticeship Program lays paramount to our core values, with many of our past and current senior leaders beginning their careers as Apprentices themselves.
Studley Enters Electrical & Instrumentation Sector
January 2011
In May 2011, Studley moved into the Electrical and Instrumentation sector of the industry. With a combined experience of over 60 years, the electrical team joined Studley and have successfully continued to grow to more than ten times its original size. This move meant Studley could now provide its customers with the complete ME&I package which aided significant growth and forced our latest move to our now 60,000 sq ft premises in Knowsley in 2015.
Relocation to 60,000 sq ft Knowsley Premises
March 2015
Studley officially opened the 60,000 sq ft Knowsley premises in March 2015. The event was attended by local dignitaries who paid homage to Studley and Electrical on Knowsley Industrial Park, Merseyside. At 60,000ft2 of covered workspace, the new facility is a far cry from the barn in which the company was founded by its current management, being three times the size of the company’s former premises on Liverpool’s Vulcan Street and supported with overhead cranes, thus helping to expand further, both mechanical and electrical. In unveiling a plaque to commemorate the event, Mr Howarth recognised the company’s commitment to apprenticeships since its formation 35 years ago, the current technical director Neil Brierton being a former apprentice himself. During the lunch Neil Brierton explained to the guests that the reason for the company’s success was its philosophy in training and developing young talent, with more than 60 apprentices being recruited in recent years. Managing director John Hyland also thanked all who had supported the business over the past three decades.
Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence
October 2023
In October 2023, Studley marked its 40th anniversary, a milestone that reflects decades of growth, commitment, and evolving leadership. Now into its third generation of family leadership, the company continues to expand its client base while nurturing long-standing partnerships. This year also saw the launch of Studley’s core company values, which have become a cornerstone of our culture. These values not only strengthen our workforce but also foster peer recognition, celebrating the dedication and talent of our team. We also celebrated achievements such as our sixth RoSPA Gold Award and recognition as Chemical Northwest’s Engineering Firm of the Year 2023.
Expanding Into Scaffolding Solutions
August 2024
In August 2024, Studley launched Studley Elevation, a dedicated arm of the business specialising in scaffolding solutions. This exciting expansion brings even more comprehensive offerings to our clients, ensuring seamless delivery across mechanical, electrical, and scaffolding services. Under the leadership of Mick Judge, Director of Studley Elevation, the division has had a strong start, building on the company’s foundation of reliability, safety, and client focus. The sky’s the limit!
